Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently visiting Brazil as part of his multi-nation tour, was conferred the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, Brazil’s highest civilian award. In a formal ceremony held in Brasília, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva presented the honour, recognising PM Modi’s leadership in deepening India-Brazil ties and enhancing collaboration at multilateral platforms including BRICS, the G20, and the United Nations. This becomes Modi’s 26th top international honour since assuming office in 2014.

Describing it as a proud and emotional moment for 140 crore Indians, PM Modi thanked President Lula, the Brazilian government, and its people for the gesture. He received full ceremonial honours at the Alvorada Palace, where he was personally welcomed by President Lula. The welcome included a 114-horse ceremonial parade, playing of both national anthems, and a traditional guard of honour—signifying the warmth and depth of the bilateral relationship.

During their discussions, the two leaders held what Modi called “fruitful talks” focused on expanding trade and diversifying economic engagement. Both acknowledged that the India-Brazil relationship holds immense potential, particularly in trade, technology, climate action, and South-South cooperation.

Cultural warmth also marked the occasion. Modi was welcomed with a vibrant ‘Op Sindoor’-themed dance performance, reflecting the growing public diplomacy between the two nations. The visit also underscores Brazil’s strategic relevance in India’s foreign policy, particularly in the context of the 17th BRICS Summit and wider geopolitical cooperation.

This high-profile Brazil leg is one of the final stops in PM Modi’s current diplomatic outreach. He is set to wrap up the tour with a visit to Namibia, aimed at reinforcing India’s engagement with African nations.
