Markets across the state celebrate Sweet Grown Alabama Day

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Sweet Grown Alabama, the state’s non-profit agricultural branding program, celebrated Sweet Grown Alabama day on Saturday, July 26.

Eight locations participated in Sweet Grown Alabama day: the city of Albertville Farmers Market, the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market, the Market at Pepper Place, the Monroeville Market Days Farmers Market, the Northport Farmers Market, the Farmers Market at Killen Park, the Town of Berlin Farmers Market, the Tuscaloosa River Market and the Village of Providence Farmers Market.

Activities varied by each location, but each market featured local farmers who sell and promote their Alabama-grown products, including produce, fresh flowers and more.

The WBRC team visited the Market at Pepper Place for Sweet Grown Alabama Day. There they had giveaways, taste tests, discounts and shared recipes. WBRC was also able to talk with Ellie Watson, the director of Sweet Grown Alabama, as well as a local farmer about the importance of shopping locally.

“It is critical that we, as Alabamians, support our local farmers because they rely on us as consumers to ensure that they can continue farming for the next generation,” said Watson.

“First thing, you’re going to be supporting your local economy. Second of all, you’re going to get- well, depends on the farmer and where they’re located and what you call local – but you’re going to get very fresh, very local produce,” said Jacob Sandlin, the co-owner/co-operator of Sandlin Farm in Holly Pond, Alabama, who sells his products at the Market at Pepper Place.
